AI literacy for kids

AI literacy means understanding what AI systems can do, where they can make mistakes, and how to check their outputs. This beginner overview connects patterns, training data, bias, and prompts with everyday decisions students can practise without using a chatbot.

A practical learning sequence

Patterns and training examples

Compare a fixed instruction with a prediction learned from examples. Ask which examples a system has seen and whether a new example is different.

Think it through: A fruit classifier has only seen red apples. What could happen when it sees a green apple?

Bias and checking claims

Look for groups or situations missing from data. Practise checking an answer against the original source rather than trusting how convincing it sounds.

Think it through: An answer includes a book title and page number. What would you check before quoting it?

Prompts that support learning

Give a clear task and useful context, request a hint, and explain the result in your own words. Use fictional details in practice prompts.

Think it through: Rewrite “do my homework” as a request for one hint that helps you take the next step.
